Post Jam updates
I'm pretty happy with how this game turned out. First place in the Fun category is great! I had a few updates to the game based on some of the feedback I got from people's comments. The changes I made are as follows:
- Player Controls:
- The player's movement has been adjusted to be more smooth. Rather than hitting top speed immediately, you have a bit of acceleration and deceleration.
- The player's base movement speed has been lowered. To compensate for this, the player now has a dash ability (Space bar) that can be used to avoid damage
- Stat scaling:
- Effects that grant movement speed bonuses have been adjusted across the board. Rather than giving flat speed bonuses, now movement speed scales with diminishing returns that should help keep the player from getting too fast. This, combined with the lowered base movement speed should hopefully make effects that increase movement speed a bit more attractive
- Effects that reduce your damage (like the perk that drastically increases shooting speed but lowers accuracy) previously would reduce your damage by a flat amount, which ended up being basically meaningless. These effects now reduce your overall damage scaling by a fixed percentage. This will hopefully help minimizing certain perks giving huge spikes in DPS without more investment.
- Misc changes:
- I've added a few more "pack filler" perks that are more low-impact with no downsides. This should hopefully make the more impactful perks a bit more rare, as well as ensuring there is more likely to always be "good enough" perks in situations where you don't want to take on a perk with a drawback
- Boss and miniboss health has been increased slightly across the board.
I'm hoping these changes address some of the core issues I and other people saw with the jam version of the game. Let me know if you think these are steps in the right direction or not!
I'm having a lot of fun working on this project and I've got a few other changes to bosses and level generation that wasn't ready for this release, so expect at least a few more updates to come at some point.
Note: I did make a few changes to how perks effects are applied to the player when the game is loaded. I don't think this should break any existing in-progress runs from my testing, but if it does- sorry! Starting a new run should fix any future loading issues.
